writing exercise
what would you like to come upon?
Anne Lamott is on Substack and revealed last week in a post that one of the things she tells her writing students is: “Write what you would like to come upon”
Here are the three ideas I came up with. Three is an arbitrary number, I just wrote till I filled one page of my journal. You should try this exercise:)
CALM
I feel pent up, easily angry, nervous, scared. I’d like to come upon a new source of calm and implement it into my daily life.
LOVE
Already, I feel as though I am learning to love everyday with A & working with toddlers. Maybe I’d like to come upon a well of self-love, but I know I have to dig it myself… perhaps I’ll strike water on the first try? Or the next?
SPRING
It’s been a mild winter (another cause for anxiety), but I still ache for warmth. I was looking through old photos last night and the sunshine in so many of them made me jealous of my past self. I would like to come upon sunlight. I should take the time to BASK when I am able.
Take Aways from this Exercise
I’m such a formulaic person. I structured these the same completely on purpose/accident. On purpose, because it made sense in my mind after doing it once. On accident, because I didn’t go into this exercise with the thought that it should be a formula (“I” statement, “come upon” sentence, and a way to implement and realize the things I want).
